PROJECT: POP VENUE THE SYMPHONY
YEAR: 2023
LOCATION: Delft, The Netherlands
NATURE: Academic
UNIVERSITY: TU DELFT
COURSE: Design Studio 6: Integrated Design
GRADE: 9/10
For the final design studio of my Bachelor’s degree at TU Delft, I developed an integrated design proposal for a contemporary music venue on a former industrial site in Delft. The project is anchored by a protected, monumental building that had to be preserved—while the scale and diversity of the program required a substantial new addition.
The design combines public and educational functions into one cohesive cultural destination, including a music school, two performance halls, a generous foyer, bar and terrace, outdoor cinema, restaurant, offices, and supporting back-of-house spaces. Rather than treating this as a purely architectural exercise, the studio demanded a fully coordinated approach: architectural concept, climate strategy, building technology, and structural design were developed in parallel and tested against each other. The result is a proposal where spatial experience and technical performance are inseparable—balancing heritage constraints with contemporary requirements for comfort, acoustics, flexibility, and buildability.
